Church in the WildwoodChurch in the Wildwood

Travel down the winding Horse Cove Road to a simpler time and visit The Church in the Wildwood. This tiny church, built in 1945 by the residents of Horse Cove, has a rich history. Before the church was constructed, residents gathered in each other's homes to sing hymns from the 1938 Cokesbury Worship Hymnal, a tradition that continues to this day. The church's sanctuary is primarily made of chestnut lumber salvaged from a nearby Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The church services began when Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Misener started serving on Sunday nights as master of ceremonies and organist. An old dinner bell announced weekend services, which typically opened with the hymn "The Church in the Wildwood" and closed with "How Great Thou Art" and "God Bless America."

The church which is run by dedicated volunteers, still welcomes those of all denominations for services and hymn singing every Sunday from 7-8pm beginning Memorial Day weekend and ending Labor Day Weekend.
